Artist Statement

Embodied Spaces explores how trans narratives are effected by the spaces that contain them. Included in the piece are five scenes that represent everyday life: a scene representing The South, a church, a classroom, a bathroom, and a courtroom. The user clicks on the cassette tapes in the scene to hear an audio clip from the interviews associated with that space. Each scene contains five cassette tapes the user must find.

Moving through the piece is intentionally difficult. Trans people must learn how to navigate the spaces they interact with every day not only for their comfort, but their survival. Rather than allowing the interview clips to speak for themselves, the added difficulty emphasizes this critical part of the trans experience. Trans people must actively think about where they are and where they are going. Embodied Spaces simulates this process to allow the user to grasp how trans people move through their day-to-day lives from their perspective.
